Antique coal iron
Antique Coal Iron – Rustic Metal Clothes Iron – Vintage Door Stop or Decorative Piece
This antique metal clothes iron was designed to be filled with hot embers — the lid opened, coals placed inside, and the iron would slowly release heat to press fabrics, linens and garments. A simple but effective tool from everyday life.
This antique coal iron features a wooden handle, designed to stay cooler while the metal body heated up from the embers inside.
The front chimney-like opening allows heat and smoke to escape, while a small vent at the back helps regulate airflow to the embers. A simple sliding mechanism on top was used to control this airflow and adjust the heat.
Inside, the iron still shows its original structure for holding hot coals.
At the back, a small metal detail — originally part of the vent — subtly resembles the face of an old man, adding a unique and slightly unexpected character to the piece.
With its solid weight and aged surface, it works beautifully as:
• a door stop
• a bookend
• a decorative piece for rustic or industrial interiors
• a prop for styling or photography
• a collectible object with history
The worn metal surface and handmade details give it a raw, authentic character that fits naturally into farmhouse, workshop or vintage-inspired spaces.
A practical object turned into a sculptural one.
Nice rustic vintage condition with visible wear and rust. There is a missing fixing detail between the base and the lid, consistent with age.
A light treatment with linseed oil can deepen the tone of the rusted surface and help protect it while preserving its raw character.
