Vintage copper bowl with lid
Vintage Copper Bowl with Lid - Rustic Kitchen Decor
Charming vintage copper bowl with a fitted lid, raised on three long slender feet.
The vessel has a beautifully aged, hand-worked appearance with a rich warm patina, visible hammering and wonderfully simple construction. Small riveted fittings and the three curved feet give it a particularly interesting traditional character.
Today it makes a wonderful decorative and functional object for a rustic or country-style kitchen. It can be used for dry kitchen storage, for displaying garlic or other produce, as an unusual decorative bowl, or as a planter or plant-pot holder. The removable lid makes it especially attractive as a display piece.
Beautiful alone on a table, shelf or kitchen counter, with all the character of an old utilitarian object that has acquired its own unique surface through years of use.
The unusually long tripod feet may also give a clue to the vessel's original function. On traditional wood-burning stoves, cookware was moved around the hot stove top to control the temperature. Raising a vessel above the hot surface created a layer of air between the bowl and the stove, reducing direct heat. A footed vessel like this may therefore have been useful for gently warming food or keeping it warm without exposing the contents to the strongest direct heat and reducing the risk of scorching.
Its exact original purpose is unknown, but the practical construction is particularly evocative of an era when heat on a wood-burning kitchen stove was controlled by distance and position rather than by turning a temperature dial.
Beautiful vintage condition with authentic signs of age and use. The copper has developed a rich natural patina with stains, oxidation, discoloration, small marks and surface scratches. These are part of the character and history of the piece. Please see the photos for details.
