Quill pens were traditionally made from the wing feathers of geese or swans. Right-handed writers preferred feathers from the left wing, so the quill curved away from the hand. The chosen feather was cured by gently heating it in hot sand to remove moisture and natural oils — this made the shaft firm and suitable for shaping. With a sharp knife, the tip was carved into a writing nib, often with a small slit to help the ink flow. Some writers trimmed the feather for elegance or wrapped the shaft with thread or leather for a better grip.
